How to Stop Shrinking from Your Own Brilliance
What I learned about visibility, vulnerability, and self-trust.
One afternoon, I couldn’t shake the feeling that life kept putting me on display before I felt ready.
The night before, I wanted to sit quietly with my cocktail and observe the crowd. Others kept wanting to talk to me. So, I sat, sipped, and listened. I worried I couldn’t hold a decent conversation.
Earlier that week, work was supposed to be easy, but I was called out at meetings and assigned to work with a group of gregarious extroverts. I did my best yet still felt vulnerable to criticism and pushback when sharing ideas.
Through all this, my ego kept whispering that I felt uncomfortable because I was above it all. At the same time, my self-saboteur convinced me I felt out of place because I wasn’t worthy of anyone’s attention.
Right after meditating on all this, my inner self gave me a fresh perspective. I realized my discomfort wasn’t about the people around me. It was about being seen before I fully accepted myself.
✨ In the Spotlight
It’s not that I want to be in the spotlight.
The spotlight follows me, exposing me, laying me bare.
Fear creeps from the surrounding darkness,
reminding me not to be vulnerable to it—
the attacks of the negatives,
the shame of embarrassment.
But when I embrace the light,
I am secure in the power of my real self,
the love of myself.
As myself, only then can I reach my full potential,
shining my light into my own darkness.
Only then will the light of love traverse the expanse
to connect with others’ lights of truth.
🌀 Taking it In
Every time I revisit this piece, I feel that familiar tug between fear and exposure.
Most of us say we don’t want the spotlight, but what we really mean is we don’t want the judgment that might come with being seen.
But the light isn’t asking for performance. It’s asking for honesty.
When we stop resisting and let ourselves be illuminated, we realize the light has always been ours. It’s not chasing us; it’s revealing us.
Stepping into the light isn’t about seeking attention. It’s about letting truth do what it’s meant to do: shine, reach, and join with other lights across the dark.
🌱 Simple Shift
The next time you feel exposed or self-conscious, pause before retreating. Instead of shrinking from the light, imagine it as a gentle presence that’s revealing. Know that it is not judging you.
Breathe in and picture the light resting on your shoulders like warmth from the sun.
Breathe out and let that same warmth travel into the places you’ve kept hidden.
This isn’t about forcing confidence. It’s about allowing truth to breathe.
Each time you soften into visibility, your light grows steadier, and other lights will find you more easily.
Much like Through the Valley of Night, this message reminds me that we can’t truly stand in the light without first learning to walk through the dark.
