New Year, Same You (And That’s Not a Problem)
Starting the year from support, not self-correction
Recently I was sitting on the couch and asked myself a simple question: What is lacking right now? Not what was lacking earlier this year. Not what I’m worried might be lacking in the year ahead, but right now.
And then, something unexpected happened. I noticed how much I’m actually not lacking.
It’s easy to live a few steps ahead of ourselves, especially this time of year. We start tallying what didn’t get done, what didn’t move fast enough, what still feels unfinished. The mind loves to treat the future like a problem to solve before it arrives.
But the present moment tells a different story.
Right now, I’m supported. Right now, I have enough to take the next step. Right now, nothing is on fire.
That might not sound like abundance in the flashy, New-Year-New-Life sense. But it’s real. And it’s the kind of abundance that actually holds you.
As the New Year approaches, I’ve been noticing how tempting it is to drag old scarcity forward with me. Old judgments. Old pressure. Old ideas about what should be different by now. But I don’t want to build a new year on yesterday’s fears.
So instead of obsessing over what’s missing, I’m practicing a different approach.
When I hear those familiar voices of the self saboteurs saying, “I’m behind. I should be further. Something’s wrong,” I shift the question. Not to bypass reality, but to ground myself in it.
What is actually supporting me right now?
What’s already working, even behind the scenes?
What’s lifting me up that I don’t usually give credit to?
More often than not, the answers are simple. A body that keeps breathing. A few people who care. A sense of direction, even if it’s still forming. Enough clarity for the next step, not the whole staircase.
That’s the energy I want to carry into the New Year. Not urgency. Not lack. Just an awareness of what’s already here, already helping.
If you’re feeling that end-of-year pressure too, maybe try it with me. Instead of asking what’s missing, ask:
What is actually supporting me right now?
You might be surprised by how much shows up when you stop scanning for what’s wrong and start noticing what’s already going well.
And that, to me, feels like a good place to enter a new year.

As we head into the New Year, I’d love to hear from you.
Name something that’s supporting you right now, even if it’s easy to overlook?

So well said. I am taking time to celebrate today, not the new year but what I have accomplished and how happy I am. I have improved in facing my saboteurs and keeping them at bay more easily. I have strengthened my Sage mind and have put many fears aside. I celebrate that. We are gifts to each other and the interactions that we have to uplift each other. I celebrate the small moments, the simple shifts that really do make a difference. We all need to have celebrations each day for the goodness and positivity we create and experience.
This is a great way to move into the new year! It feels very purposeful and grounding to the present. Also positive!
